Duval County Florida (Jax) Close to Saving High School Sports Programs
The buzz since March’s announcement that ALL SPORTS would be cut from Jacksonville, FL high schools due to a $97 Million dollar deficit rallied many private organizations into fundraising frenzy! We’re happy to report that Duval County high school students will likely be able to participate in all seven sports this school year despite the loss of district funding, but it’s still not clear what will happen to those sports next year.
Duval Athletic Director Jon Fox said there is already enough money for golf and cross-country, and there’s enough time to continue to raise money for the other five sports: lacrosse, wrestling, slow-pitch softball, tennis and junior varsity soccer.
So far, various community organizations have raised about $188,000 to help these sports this year. About $236,000 is needed to keep all of them running. In addition, about $20,000 has been set aside in a separate fund to help whichever sport still needs it this year, or to put away to help with next school year. The organizations created funds within existing nonprofit accounts to accept donations for the sports. The money will be turned over to the district to pay for the coaches’ supplements for each sport. Read more here…

Four Reasons Why We are Better than Scrip!
Some local organizations have adopted scrip programs for their fundraisers. Scrip is like “substitute money.” The way it works is, merchants agree to take scrip in place of cash at face value. Parents, donors, athletic supporters etc. buy the scrip at face value… $25 to buy $25 worth of scrip, which can be spent in a variety of places. The fundraiser makes about 50% of the face value which can be applied to student tuition, building projects, whatever they need the funds for. Sounds like a pretty good deal doesn’t it?
Well, we have a better deal… and here’s why:
1. SAVINGS FOR THE CUSTOMER With a scrip project, the donors, parents, athletic supporters etc. do not benefit by saving anything. A dollar is still a dollar, and they have the added inconvenience of reloading their scrip card, or arranging to buy it in the first place. All you can do is appeal to your neediness, the good of the school, the project etc. and hope they will buy some out of the kindness of their hearts. Which some will… but MORE people will buy an EASY SELL Coupon Book with $200 worth of savings (or more!) for $7.50. It’s such a good deal they may buy 3 or 4 books, give out to their friends, give as gifts to the neighbors etc. Half price pizza tonight? YES!!
2. MERCHANTS HAVE OPTIONS The merchants are still in it for the same commitment as scrip… or maybe even less than 50%.. their offer is theirs to make!
3. FUNDRAISER POTENTIAL PROFITS ARE GREATER The fundraiser has a better than 50% profit deal, based on volume ordered, they can TRIPLE their investment! The price you sell the book for is up to you, whatever the value of savings your book ends up to be and whatever your market will bear. You can always change the price of the book too as you see how sales go. Selling like hotcakes? Bump the price a dollar a book, or sell during games or events at a table for a dollar off during the show for example.
4. WITH SCRIP THERE IS NO OUTREACH Part of the value of the Around Town For Less Custom Coupon Books program is the emphasis on outreach! Your organization, team, club, students, youth group, etc. are given tips to GO OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY and talk with local businesses, thereby spreading the word about your cause, your project, your organization as a whole, and building relationships with local merchants. This can be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, and long term benefits can ensue from simple face to face meetings. The selling of the finished books is a similar outreach! The customers are easy to sell the books to, and the merchants in your book benefit from their association with you specifically. This point also applies to all the “passive” fundraising programs like discount cards, collection of box tops and soup labels, and other fundraisers where all the merchant selection is pre-done for you and you just sell it. Convenient to a point, but not socially engaging like our program!
